Piece Overview
"Fragments of Us" explores identity, connection, and the fluid nature of human relationships. At first glance, the artwork appears to be a fusion of colours and textures, but upon closer inspection, human figures emerge within each heart. These figures do not match their own hearts but instead mirror the design of the opposite one. This subtle detail suggests that we often see ourselves reflected in others rather than within ourselves, highlighting the way we absorb, carry, and intertwine with the emotions, experiences, and identities of those we love.
The human-shaped hearts symbolise more than just love—they represent the very essence of being. Our identities are not entirely self-contained but are shaped by those around us. The rich colour palette—cream, pink, red, blue, purple, and maroon—evokes warmth, passion, and complexity, reflecting the layered nature of human relationships. The crayon-like texture reinforces this, conveying rawness, imperfection, and the way lives blend together while still remaining distinct. These elements suggest that love and identity are not fixed; they shift, evolve, and overlap in unseen ways.
The figures are not immediately visible, requiring the viewer to come closer to discover them. This mirrors the way true connection and understanding take time and deeper attention. Their placement suggests longing, displacement, and unseen bonds—souls that belong together yet feel slightly out of place. It raises a profound question: Do we ever truly belong to ourselves, or do we exist in fragments within one another? Love and identity are deeply intertwined; to love is to be transformed. Yet, the mismatch of the figures suggests an emotional paradox—while we may feel deeply connected to another, we may also struggle with the question of where we truly belong.
This piece invites reflection on self-perception and human relationships:
• Are we defined by our own essence, or by those who leave imprints on us?
• Do we ever truly see ourselves, or only through the lens of another?
• Is love about finding someone who reflects us, or about carrying a part of someone within us?
It also raises the question of fate versus choice—have these figures exchanged places by chance, or is there an unseen force pulling them towards each other? Fragments of Us suggests that love, identity, and connection transcend logic, defying rigid boundaries and existing in a quiet yet profound entanglement.
